BKK Market Allowed to Reopen from Tuesday

Phnom Penh: The Phnom Penh Capital Administration has decided to allow Boeung Keng Kang Market to reopen after it was hit by a Covid-19 outbreak two weeks ago. Phnom Penh Governor, Mr. Khuong Sreng, says the market has taken the necessary safety measures and after inspecting it, he’s happy to allow vendors to return from Tuesday 13 July.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has asked all security staff, vendors, workers and other stakeholders to keep coming forward for further Covid-19 tests on a regular basis, so that another outbreak can be avoided. It says proof of a negative test will be required in order to continue trading.

Over 100 Covid-19 cases were recorded at BKK Market, which is located in BKK 1. Surrounding streets were initially blocked but were allowed to reopen to traffic the day after the outbreak was first confirmed.

As BKK Market gets permission to reopen, Kandal Market in Phnom Penh’s riverside area, has been closed for 14 days after someone working there tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday morning. Across town, Olympic Market also remains closed, but its 14-day closure notice expires later this week.
